Open source software can be as good or better than software you pay for. A good example is 'Audacity' for sound editing.

Popular open source software has an active development base. This means that new versions are often released more regularly than equivalent commercial software. When bugs are found, these can be fixed almost immediately.

Open source software usually (not always, but usually) doesn't get hackers so excited to exploit the back doors, and is often safer.

Be sure to check the licensing agreement for the open source software (OSS). Look for GPL or similar licensing to be sure there won't be legal challenges for use of the OSS. OSS is free to use on many computers as desired and share freely with others.

Open Source software is usually community based, so there is nearly always someone who can help you to find the solution to any difficulties you may have.
