Tip Sheet

Would strongly recommend Chinese and Spanish. Chinese is common throughout Asia's Chinese speaking countries. Spain is used through South America and most European countries. English can be used to fill in the blanks.

This very much depends where you are travelling to. There are countries in the world where people likely only speak their local language. For instance, if visiting China you would be well advised to be able to read simple Mandarin, or hire a translator.

Chinese will be very useful if you plan to travel to China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and some parts of Indonesia.

French is also a good alternative to learn if you plan to travel to some African countries.

I would recommend learning essential words such as "danger", "warning", "help", "exit", ... in the local language of any country you plan traveling to. Just in case of an emergency.

English is not the only language you need; it's good to know some basic words in French, German and Spanish. You can often find someone who speaks at least one of the other languages who will help you find what you need.
