You have to do a careful analysis of the keywords that you want to target and focus on those with greater commercial intent. Even though some keywords might bring a lot of traffic, they may be more harder to sustain and more difficult to give a good ROI.

Before spending time optimising for your chosen keywords TEST them first by paying Google to appear on page 1. See if they convert. This will save you months of uncertainty and bring you profits sooner. Don't waste time SEO'ing the wrong words ;)
