Start taking them to the used auto shows/lots at least a year or two before they will be ready to get a car of their own. Prepare them for the reality of what choices they will have.

Be sure they pay for at least 1/2 the purchase price. They will take better care of something they had to spend their own earnings on.

Include them in the maintenance and servicing of your car so they can see what's required and what's entailed with car ownership. Have them pump the gas and listen to the recommendations of the oil change or tune up guys.

Show them how to change a tire and jumpstart a battery properly.
