Tip Sheet
Martial Arts Training: if you find it hard to get motivated before a scheduled workout pick up a martial arts magazine or book and flip through it. This will help to set your mind to the task at hand. Tip Credibility: 46 (Best Tip!)
Martial Art Training: It has been said that the marital arts are 90% mental and 10% physical. But don’t think all you have to do is think your way through your training! That 10% should take just about everything you can muster up. Tip Credibility: 33
Martial Art Training: The really great thing about using the martial arts as your training platform is it doesn't take a lot of equipment. You can train anywhere! While standing in a grocery line simply lift one foot to work on your balance. Tip Credibility: 33
Martial Arts Training: For Bruce Lee martial art was his chosen path to self-improvement. It's never just about learning how to fight or how to defend off attackers. It's learning about YOU. Tip Credibility: 31
Martial Art Training: every stressful situation in which you find yourself in is an opportunity to train your ability to handle yourself well. There are no exceptions to this rule. Tip Credibility: 30
Never dwell on what you were (or were not) in the past. Too many people live in the past! The only thing that matters in your training is WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY! Train today as if your life depended on it. But have fun! Don't make it a "job". Tip Credibility: 29
Martial Art Training: if you need a pick-me-up before a workout try a caffeine pill over a candy bar. Caffeine, in moderation, is good for the heart and great for a hard workout. A candy bar will soon leave you feeling worst off. Tip Credibility: 26
Never train beyond your ability to keep focused. Fifty well-placed kicks are more important then a thousand kicks thrown sloppy. Whenever you find your focus waning switch to another exercise or call it a day. Tip Credibility: 25
Never grab a "quick meal" on the way to a training session. Either eat well before your training begins or wait until you're finished. Forget fast foods altogether. Your body needs high quality nutrients. Tip Credibility: 24
Commercial schools have one major draw back.. they are commercial! The up side is you have many people to train with. But, if you can find a teacher who trains for the love it, and invites you to join him or her, you'll learn a lot more in less time. Tip Credibility: 23
Learning one or two techniques well beats learning a dozen techniques half-a**. Keep your training real. Leave Hollywood stunts for Hollywood! Tip Credibility: 21
Mixed Martial Arts: Many practitioners strive to mix too many systems. Or they mix incompatible systems. Any one martial art discipline is enough if you learn to master that system. Which can be a lifetime pursuit. Tip Credibility: 21
Two of the best things a person learns while practicing martial arts are (1) Discipline (2) Focus. Discipline to practice on a regular basis and intense focus to improve physically and mentally. Tip Credibility: 20
If you have a training partner keep in mind that the two of you are not competing against one another. The idea is to help each other to learn and to develop your individual skills while getting in a good workout. Tip Credibility: 20
Start your workouts with the most demanding physical exercises first. Only after you've drilled them hard should you move onto those techniques involving more concentration and a higher level of skill. Tip Credibility: 20
A person can train in the martial arts at any age, from any physical condition they find themselves in. The trick is not to try to cover too much ground at once! Be patient. Work out to work out. Find a training partner with similar aspirations. Tip Credibility: 16
Always warm up before you begin any strenuous workout. The pros do! But the layman often feels he or she can ignore it. You can't! A good warm up lessens your chances of injuries. It's one of the secrets of champions. Tip Credibility: 13
Drink nothing but pure water during a workout. And don't over do it! Stay away from all of the sport drinks. Good, clean, pure water is all your body needs. And put away the candy bars. They don't do as much for you as is often claimed. Tip Credibility: 10
Martial Art Training: Structure your training to take advantage of your level of physical and mental energy. When you are physically exhausted it makes no sense to practice kicks. Such practice will only lead to sloppy habits. Tip Credibility: 10
As a retired endurance athlete I disagree with your statement about sport drinks. Sport drinks can put of the point where you are going to bonk from lack of energy almost indefinitely. Tip Credibility: 8
I think it's too different subjects: hydration versus energy. Water really is all you need for hydration. When it energy it really has to do with the length of the training or workout. For short, intense, martial arts workouts water should do for most. Tip Credibility: 6
