Tip Sheet

The best photos of children are those which are entirely natural and imposed. In other words, the children do not even realise that you are there. With permission, follow them in normal play, take lots of photos and choose the best.

Instead of using the "say Cheese" say something that will instantly make them laugh like "say monkeys" (all kids think monkeys are funny)

Use a brightly colored camera. All kids, infants included, naturally will look at a bright color. I've seen a pro use a bright shocking pink camera and he always had the kids looking his way.

Use perspective - a shot from an area above them or low and looking up can capture a real different perspective of a posed, straight on shot.

On most digital cameras, there is an option to have the camera take a whole string of pictures very fast. Get the kids to laugh, and you will have a bunch of good pictures to choose from.
