Always warm (heat) water in a water boiler. It is the most efficient way to get warm water. Don't heat up more than what you need.

Don't leave appliances on standby, it uses up as much electricity as if it was on. So switch your computer off properly, switch off the TV, go round the house and switch off all appliances you are not using.

Whenever the weather permits use a washing line outside. It uses no power and your clothes will smell better than if you use the dryer.

Use a slow cooker (crock pot) to cook winter meals. They use a trickle of electricity and are actually cheaper to run than most stove tops.

You can make a slow cooker with a box and some old blankets. Bring a pot of food to the boil. Wrap in the blankets and put in the box. Be careful! The residual heat will continue to cook your food without power.

Use a sun geyser or solar geyser to heat water to boiling point! Connect it up in such a way that your electric geyser can be your backup on days without sun.

Install piping on the roof to preheat the water running into your electric geyser using the sun. Piping system can freeze up at night or in cold weather. You use zero electricity if you bypass the geyser and shower or bath in the afternoons.

During the winter most people leave power going to their central a/c units, even though it never runs. By turning off the breaker, you cut the electricity flow and save money. In spring, turn it back on 1 month before you need it again!
