I always buy itmes that are heavily discounted because the company have released or are about to release a new product. Also when this happens you can pick up some pre-owned items on eBay very cheaply as 'new owners' sell off their older products.

I always try to stay clear of the "new" item and purchase the one just below it. It's generally almost the same thing and saves me tons of money.
