Use the commercial intent tool at adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/ . Enter your keywords or web address and it will give you a rough indicator of commercial viability. Not perfect though...

Look for areas which have a lot of advertisers on Google AdWords. Generally, this shows that other people have done the research already and believe that there is money to made from this niche.

Websites like magazines.com and Amazon.com are a great place to get ideas for niches you might want to develop products for. If they sell products in that niche, there's a good chance you will too.
