When travelling outside term time, many universities rent out student accommodation at bargain rates. This is often in central London and perfectly placed to see the sites.

Many museums, galleries, religious institutions etc are supported by public money and provide free entry to tourists. There are so many that there's no need to go into any commercial equivalents in London if you're on a budget.

If you want to see a show, but not pay full price, visit the TKTS Ticket Booth in Leicester Square, which offers on-the-day half-price tickets. Avoid the others with different spellings, they are unofficial.
