Tip Sheet

Sit up straight and never sit with your legs crossed, as this twists the pelvis and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. You'll notice this if you cross your legs the other way - the pain/discomfort should change sides, or reduces on the initial side.

Lie on your back on the floor, with your calves horizontally on a dining chair. This alters the lower back shape, and reduces the pressure of standing too long, or of being over weight. Start with 5 minutes. This may be sore at first, but it works.

Have a hot bath, then have your partner give you a good lower-back massage, including the buttocks, where the sciatic nerves run. Use a deep-heat oil or liniment to warm the muscles. Then try sleeping on your side with legs tucked up to align the spine.

Keep your body weight at an optimum level. Overweight people are more prone to sciatica because of stress on their joints and bones. Proper weight is attained by a diet rich in fresh leafy greens and fruits, whole grains, and limited fats.

During your daily routine, avoid activities that strain the lower back. Lift properly by bending your legs at the knees. If your job requires heavy lifting, make sure you are wearing a back brace for proper support. NEVER sacrifice your back for your job.
