Of course the most obvious way to keep warm is by using an alternate source of heat such as a space heater. If the electric is out and you have a gas stove, boil pots of water on the stove. This will create some humidity and heat in the house.

I put on extra layers of clothes, extra jumpers and a hat and I sit under a blanket with the fire burning logs from my own hedge. Snuggling up two to a blanket works even better.
