Agreed. Most directories show the Number of sites within the category or subcategory - and the fewer the better. If your new listing ends up 5, 10 or more pages deep, it's far less likely to get crawled.

You may think it best to submit to the category that has the highest PageRank. However, a lower-PR category with fewer competing links may prove better. Choose one that balances relevancy, Pagerank, and number of competing listings.
