Tip Sheet

Store them in your refrigerator. Use a container or bag if worried about them getting wet. If there is a fire they'll be protected, and the fridge should protect them from other dangers. This is ideal for financial papers, tickets and the like.

Scan your documents and burn them to a disc. Then you can store the backup offsite. I then place the important stuff into a plastic waterproof bag and and have them stored in a metal container filled with water. Pretty much fireproof.

Rent a safe deposit box at your local bank. Can't get much safer than that. Cost starts around $20/year for a small box (around 6x3x24") for discs etc. It's usually a deductible expense, and well worth getting a larger one for irreplaceable documents.

Fireproof safes shaped like bulky briefcases start at about $30 - $40 at the office stores. Choose one that accommodates file folders: many don't. A modest expense compared to losing it all in a fire. Secure to something immovable to deter thieves too.

Keep your Tax Returns forever. The Tax man can only go back seven years on filed returns. One man recently was audited for a 15 year old return the IRS said was not filed. Make digial copies of old returns and keep forever.
