Compost is great but watch out for a few things. (1)Yard clippings could contain weed killers that might kill your garden plants. (2)Pulled-up weeds might add weed seeds to your garden unless the compost gets hot enough to kill the seeds.

Compost works great for your garden and provides lots of nutrients. Add some steer or chicken manure so the waste products “heat up” and decompose. Turn your compost pile on a regular basis. It helps break down the waste, but can also cause an odor.

Make sure you don't add any pet excrement to the compost. Dog and cat manure can have worm eggs that can survive for over a year, even in the heat of the compost and can then stick to the vegetables and infect humans.

Any type of fruit and vegetable scraps work well: Peelings, skins, cores and seeds from apples, bannanas, onions, potatoes and so on. The head from a cabbage for example, and wilted lettuce leaves are all great additions to your compost pile.
