Add diatomaceous earth (same stuff used in pool filters) to the soil where you want slugs to stay away. It's extremely fine and sharp-will cut slugs if they try to crawl across it. Wear gloves and be careful not to inhale it when applying it to soil. Tip Credibility: 6 (Best Tip!)
Found this out the hard way - the beer will tend to attract slugs from a rather wide area, so don't place it in the middle of the flower bed, as the slugs will take bites off of flowers and veggies on their way to it. Best to place them at the edges. Tip Credibility: 5
The most effective way to get rid of slugs (better than even the best poison available) is to use stale beer(or new if you like) in a 3" wide by 1.5" high container. They will come from a wide area, crawl in, and drown. + No risk of poisoning your pets. Tip Credibility: 4
Put sand around your plants. Slugs do not like crossing over course substances. Tip Credibility: 4
Slugs are made of a high percentage of water and like moist areas. Try to use drip irrigation and water deeply- not on the surface. Place barriers around your plants, including sand, egg shells or wood shavings. Copper tape works the best-wet or dry. Tip Credibility: 4
