If you have a lot of critical data you need to do regular backups. Get an external HD with as much storage capacity as you can and schedule one day a week to back up your entire computer and data. Better safe than sorry!

Use a backup HD as your main HD, you won't have to back your puter HD up. I only have my OS on my puter, everything else goes right to the backup HD. Keeps it running faster too. Only have to worry about burning a disk of my external HD once in a while.
