Wrap your box of matches in aluminium foil when you go camping. This will stop them getting damp and/or wet.

Improvise a lightweight frying pan by first finding a forked stick. Lay it on a double layer of heavy duty aluminium foil and wrap the foil round each of the branches, letting it sag a little in the middle.

Wrap some stones in foil and place them near your camp-fire. At bedtime, wrap the stones in a towel and place them in the bottom of your sleeping bag to keep your feet warm.

A piece of heavy-duty alfoil under your sleeping bag will prevent it getting damp.

If bees are trying to get into your can of lemonade, cover the top with foil and push a straw through to drink from.

You can make a camp shower by filling a bucket with holes. For ease of packing, choose a canvas bucket. Hang from a strong branch, add water (or have someone else add it) and have a quick shower.

To wash clothes easily at your camp-site, insert a toilet plunger through a hole in the lid of a 20 litre plastic bucket. Place clothes, detergent and water in the bucket, push on the lid and use the plunger as an agitator.

A two-metre piece of wide bubble wrap makes a reasonable air-bed under your sleeping bag.

Place some cat litter in an old sock and leave inside stored tents and/or sleeping bags. It will prevent musty odours.

Use curtain rings to attach small items to your belt or backpack when you're hiking. This will leave your hands free.

A roll of gaffer tape has many uses when camping. Use it to patch a small hole in a tent. Place over the tear inside and out. If your canoe springs a small leak, pull it onto land, dry around the hole and gaffer tape it.

If you have to cook over an open flame, rub the bottom of cast-iron cookware with a bar of soap first. There will be no black cooking marks to scrub off later.
