Cut out redundancy and unnecessary wordiness in your writing

For example, instead of saying, "She nodded her head," just "she nodded" is sufficient. Nodding IS with the head. Same with "pacing back and forth." Just say "pacing" because it means one way and then the other.

One way to find your way in the backcountry

Use a stream, powerline, the edge of a wash or canyon or other feature that leads to or close to your destination as a "handrail" to follow. It may not be the most direct route, but if it can prevent you from getting lost, it's the best route.
