Cherries

Bing cherries should be deep red large and plump almost to bursting. Equally good sweet but not as common are the bright reddish brown Lambert cherries. Sour cherries are smaller paler red and only used for cooking.

Watermelon

Look for firm well-shaped melon; one side will be light colored from resting on the soil. A cut watermelon is easier to judge for quality, it should have juicy deep pink flesh with no white streaks and the seeds should be dark and shiny.

To shell, cut slits or crosswise gashes in the flat sides and drop into boiling water a minute or 2. While still warm remove the shells and inner skins using a sharp knife. If any of the skins are difficult to peel, reboil for a few seconds.

Technically nuts, chestnuts are primarily used as vegetables.It is hard to tell how fresh chestnuts are when they're in the shell. Feel them and be sure that the nut seems firm and has not drawn away from the shell.
