Exercise is best because it makes you feel and look better, consumes extra calories and works your muscles so the fat gets burned in preference to unnecessary muscle wasting away as you lose weight. So you don't just get smaller and still look fat.

Get your taste buds more attuned to fresh fruit rather than sweet-tasting deserts and avoid adding cream. Eventually you will not like eating cookies and sweet puddings that are laden with calories.

To avoid losing muscle when walking/running, do regular push-ups, crunches and planks to remind your body that you want to retain or build muscle and only burn the fat. Allow at least 1 day to recover from muscle-building exercise though.
